Personal Development
At Surlingham Primary School, personal development is at the heart of our vision for every child. Guided by our school values of Believe, Explore, Achieve, we are committed to developing confident, respectful and resilient young people who are well prepared for life beyond primary school.
We believe that education is about far more than academic success. Through our carefully planned personal development curriculum, children are supported to understand themselves, build positive relationships and develop the knowledge, skills and character needed to thrive in modern Britain. We encourage pupils to become curious about the world, respectful of others and confident in their own identities and aspirations.
Our curriculum provides a wide range of opportunities for pupils to develop personally, socially and emotionally. Through PSHE, assemblies, enrichment activities and wider school experiences, children learn about mental and physical wellbeing, healthy relationships, online safety, equality, diversity and citizenship. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own values and understand the importance of kindness, empathy and responsibility.
Children are given meaningful opportunities to contribute to school life and the wider community through leadership roles such as School Council, Eco Committee, Play Leaders and Kindness Crew. We want pupils to develop confidence in their ability to make a positive difference and to understand the importance of teamwork, responsibility and service.
Our personal development offer is enriched through a broad range of experiences including educational visits, residentials, sporting events, performances, careers talks, charity work and community partnerships. We are proud of the strong links we have with local organisations, including Wheatfen Nature Reserve, local churches and Padmaloka Buddhist Centre, which help children develop an appreciation of different beliefs, cultures and communities.
We place great importance on pupil wellbeing and creating a culture where every child feels safe, valued and heard. Through events such as Mental Health Week, Safer Internet Day and Eco Day, alongside daily pastoral support, we help children develop resilience, self-belief and strategies to manage challenges positively.
By the time our pupils leave us, we want them to be compassionate, articulate and aspirational individuals who are ready to embrace the next stage of their education and contribute positively to society. Above all, we want every child to believe in themselves, explore the world around them and achieve their full potential.
